Akismet not catching spam, popularity contest known issues

Been getting a lot more spam lately, and Akismet fails to catch them. Have 1000+ caught by Akismet, and 300+ which are spam, but not caught by Akismet. And that over the last 3 days. That’s too bad for Akismet, or too good for the spammers. Have re-activated HashCash plugin, so let’s see what happens in the next few days.

On the other hand, popularity contest, the plugin that shows the most popular posts on the right, has a known issue. WordPress seems to have an issue with spam comments. So the posts which have more comments, even if they are marked as spam and not shown, will come up higher on the list. So the list you see on the right, are mostly pages, that are hit most often by spammers!

Got to check if the latest version fixes this, else fix it myself! I am bugged by this bug! Anyone got any fixes?

iPhoto to Gallery

Vaibhav suggested using iPhotoToGallery for uploading images to my photo gallery. I downloaded it and installed it. But couldn’t figure out where did it go! The installation app asks you the target folder to install the application in. I selected the “Applications” folder, but couldn’t find any new app in there. So even re-installed the app three times. Went and checked iPhoto, but couldn’t find it in any menu options too.

Then today I wanted to upload some pictures to the gallery, so went to the Export option (I scale down the images before uploading them) and there! There was a tab called “Gallery” and it prompted me to enter my Gallery URL and login/password. I did, and was surprised that it connected, loaded the albums and I was able to publish the selected photos to the gallery.

Ok, I had seen the screenshot on their site, but didn’t pay attention to it. Otherwise I could figure out that it would come up in the export window. But I guess they can provide a clear instruction about where to access the plugin!

But I am happy with the way it works. It’s very simple, unobtrusive and can even post the comments on the photos (that’s surely something I wanted). Good work Zach!

More spam - HashCash broken?

I am getting a lot more spam comments these days. There are pretty interesting comments nowadays. Looks like either people have written intelligent bots or there are actual human beings posting spam comments. The comments would refer to some of the content and then make an opinion or ask a question. Would look like a legitimate comment, but if you check out the IP address / Email - they are spammers.

I’ve got WP HashCash setup on this WordPress installation. This comment spam protection plugin basically generates a hash key and compares it when the comment is posted. If it’s valid, the comment will be allowed. I am thinking how am I getting so many spam comments evenn with HashCash installed. Is it broken? Or is it the usual “cracker is one step ahead of the hacker” thingie?

Get off Spammers!

I wrote about comment spam I was getting on my blogs a while ago. I didn’t bother to do anything about it, but last week it just went out of hands.

I used to get about 250 spam comments everyday on both mehtanirav and TrustAndFreedom. The Magnet blog also gets lot of spam.

I didn’t want to install a Captcha on the blog as the server does not have GD support. And I found WP-HashCash. It’s pretty simple to setup, does not require GD, and is 100% effective! I did not have any spam for the last three days!

I strongly recommend HashCash for anybody using WordPress!

Convert your blog into a podcast

I like this idea! It’s quite simple, but has a very good potential.

How about converting your blogs into podcasts? Feed2Podcast takes your blog’s RSS feed and converts that into a podcast. The text to speech technology is not perfect yet, but it’s a good start. Good for people like me who wanted to do some podcasts, but never got the time around them ;)

You can check out the podcast for my blog.

Got this from Ajay.
