Transferring sites from one server to another using FTP

We had to duplicate one site on another server today. And we had only FTP access to both the servers. The last time I had to do this, I used “mget” to download all files and folders from one server and then used a script to upload them to another server. It was a pain to create all the folders myself, and the script I used broke on certain file names.

So I wanted something better this time. Tried to hack up the script a bit, but did not have enough time before the go-live. Did some Google, and found out “lftp“. The command line linux tool is amazing! It does a lot of things! To download all the files from one server, I simply had to use the mirror option with source and destination folders. And to upload them back to the new server, I used the same option, but with a -R switch to reverse the process and upload files instead of downloading.

I wish I found this earlier!

Few interesting image generators

An SMS conversation that led to this post:

  • Avni to me: Hi buddy! How’s life?
  • Me to Avni: Going great. New love, me in the sky!
  • Avni to me: Cool… Falling in love is like sky diving.. Open the parachute on time ;-)

Falling in Love

Found a few image generators on the web.

Keeping things in existance

Getting present to the need to keep things in existance! I make promises and commitments throughout the day, honor many of them, and then miss some. What I noticed, was that the things that did not complete today, did not complete even tomorrow, go out of existance for me! I use iCal to keep my schedules, but if something is not accomplished for a week, I forget about it.

Of course, the mind has a very limited retention. And I will miss things that I don’t write down. Writing down something keeps it in existance. This is not a new thing, I have been preaching and practicing it for long, but just reached another level in it!

Have been talking to people at office about keeping promises in existance for the last few days. Many have taken up using calendar systems. I think this is a solid step towards delivering on our promises. Good going!

Gujarati Blogs and GujaratiLexicon on Zee Gujarati

Divya Bhaskar carried an article about Gujarati Blog world this Sunday. Gujarati Lexicon, Utkarsh, Kartik Mistry and Meena Chheda have all got place in the article, and that makes us proud! The Gujarati blog world is growing, and it’s good to see that newspapers are taking notice of that. Divya Bhaskar is considered a progressive newspaper, and it’s commendable for them to cover such topics. Kartik has blogged more on this, along with a photo of the article.

In another media coverage the same day, Zee Gujarati extensively covered Gujarati Lexicon in an afternoon show. I did not see the show, and would love to get a copy of it, but people who saw, reported it was good coverage.

So two good news on the same day. Incidently April Fool’s Day!

Taking Responsibility

I was looking for a good podcast / video to use in our monthly review meetings. The topic was taking responsibility! Taking responsibility even for things that normally seem out of your control. Being at the source of your actions, and not being limited by the circumstances.

Taking ResponsibilityOur people do take responsibility for their actions, but we are facing problems in execution, when it comes to coordinating and integrating with a number of teams - and the clients. I had read about the circle of influence and the circle of concern in Stephen Covey’s 8th Habit, and was looking for some media that could make the whole thing interesting!

Found it via some Google & Yahoo! video searches! It’s a video by Young America, describing the story of Hank. How he performs in school, and how his being popular, but undependable, affects his career.

Ran it in the monthly review meetings today. And I think people liked it!
