Reliance NetConnect on a Mac

Lot of posts related to Mac lately! Today, I wanted to get online from home and thought of hooking up my Reliance phone via the data cable. The rconnect software works well on Windows and Linux, but I was not sure about Mac. So I plugged one end of the cable into the phone and the other on the USB port of the Mac. Went to System Preferences -> Network and it told me that the system has detected the LG CDMA USB Modem and I should configure it!

I tried it out, but the default modem driver did not work. So I took my pick and selected an “au CDMA” driver. And to my surprise, it worked!

lg_cdma_network_settings

The dial up settings are simple:

  • The number to dial is #777
  • Username and password are your mobile phone number
lg_cdma_internet_connect

Good to be connected this way. Though the speed is not high, it’s workable. The main advantage is I can take it almost anywhere in the country and still be connected!

Man thanks a lot, I have a tata indicom connection. The default modem drivers (I guess it was apple v.92) did not work. Just hope that the au CDMA one does.

#2 Aditya on 01.03.07 at 11:24 am

Hi, the au modem script did work and it was able to connect to my phone and try to connect. But then the phone shows “ASYNC DATA” and OS X say “No carrier found”…. any idea what’s happening?

Hey, anyways I did get my issues sorted. Had to use a Modem Script generator for it. But your blog still gave me an idea of how things work, plus hope that I can still configure a mac.

I had booked a Reliance Net connect connection as I got a free offer with my HCL laptop.

The offer was for Rs.3750 for three months internet usage free with a download limit of 1

GB.

The strange thing was the next month I got a bill for Rs. 382 which was followed by

another bill of Rs. 2464.

Apparently the FREE OFFER WITH HCL AND HP AND OTHER OFFERS IS NOT FREE FOR THREE MONTHS.

THEY SEND YOU BILLS THE NEXT MONTH.When I escalated it to Reliance they said they would

look into it and have since never gotten back. According to my bill there is a fine print

that says its 1 GB download or 20 hours of internet surfing time (which is not specified

anywhere). That means if you cross the 20 hours you pay @ Rs0.50 per minute.

I urge anyone who has THE HP OR HCL OR COMPAQ LAPTOP TO NOT BUY THE DATACARD FREE OFFER

ITS JUST RELIANCE’S WAY OF CHEATING PEOPLE.

IF YOU ARE SO KEEN ON A DATACARD YOU MAY HAVE MINE (FREE OF COST IF U CAN HELP ME TAKE

THESE PEOPLE TO TASK FOR CHEATING CUSTOMERS. ITS WORTHLESS NOW GIVEN THE PILED UP BILLS)

Hi Raju,

Just plugin the phone using a USB cable to the MacBook. Go to your System Preferences - Network. It should detect the phone. You can then select the CDMA driver and get going.

:Nirav

#9 raju on 04.18.07 at 11:19 am

Hi Nirav,

Thanks for quick reply.

I tried but I didn’t see CDMA driver in Network settings window. Could you tell me how do I came know whether it is recognized the phone or not. where it will list CDMA driver to select it.

My Mac OS X version is 10.4.8.

Hi! Guys. Can any body give some specific information how to start the CDMA Modem (Tata indicom-LG phone)with iBook (OS 10.4.9). Which au CDMA modem selection is working, or any other work around.

Help is appreciated

#12 Nirav on 05.01.07 at 12:43 pm

First things first: When you connect your phone and go to the Network option in System Preferences, the OS must detect and ask you to configure it. Until you get it, it won’t work.

Once you get it, you can configure it to use the modem (au CDMA 1x WIN W01K works for my LG 6230).

Do a little trial and error to see what works.

Anyone using an Tata Indicom data card with the most recent Macbooks? I am thinking of getting a Macbook, but the only hurdle so far has been that it doesnt have a PCMCIA slot. So fine - I can get a PCMCIA to USB adapter that will let me plug in the card via a USB port.

Not being a Mac user so far, I am curious as to whether the driver described above is going to work in this case. Not being able to use a data card is a deal-killer for me as fas as Macs go, unfortunately.

Vandit

PS: Great post, Nirav. I was beginning to think I was the only Mac user with this problem in India…

Based on the above blogs, i purchased a Reliance Data Connection i.e, HAUWEII EC 325 and connected my macbook to it after loading the Hauweii drivers. Unfortunately, it’s not working even though i followed the exact steps mentioned.

The system is detecting the modem port, but when trying to connect it says a modem error, please check your settings and try again…

Any help from anyone would be helpful…

For some reason when I connected the data card, it was showing 2 HAUWEII cards available, i had to delete both install again, and then despite showing both again, deleting one HAUWEII cleared the problem and it connected fine.

I also tried the Launch2Net and it didn’t work.

Thanks Kunal.

I too got a HCL computer and now got myself registered with it for a reliance data card. But it seems as reliance is upto it’s old game of sucking the people whom it bills ( and leaving scores of others without bills - there were scores of such phones in chennai which has not received a single bill for the last three years ! )

F… the Reliance datacard !

Hello,

I bought a New HCL Laptop couple of Days ago and i was very much excited about the Reliance free data card that i was going to get tomorrow paying them 3750. I am lucky i read this forum and i will never go for this as one of our friend said the maximum time is 1 GB or 20 hours, which ever is earlier.

Can you suggest me best data card or service i should opt for my new laptop. I never used a wireless internet as this is my first laptop… Any help is appreciated… Also, can i use this laptop continously for like 16 hours a day?

Thank you,
Mohit

#31 Nirav on 06.23.07 at 11:39 am

Mohit: I don’t have comments on the data card from Reliance. I happily use my LG phone to connect the net.

And as for using the laptop for 16 hours a day, well, I don’t see a problem to the laptop. The batteries will wear out a tad faster though. And if you are going to work for 16 hours in front of the computer, you will wear out a tad faster as well ;-)

hi..

there seems to be a problem with using the huawei EC 325 (reliance net connect) on the older macs.

My intel mac worked just fine.. all I had to do was install the drivers of the net and it worked like a charm.

but when I tried it with my older ibook g4.. there seems to be a conflict with the internal modem… It gives me the option of choosing te driver, but it still figures that its an internal modem. in my show list, it never apeares as any thing ohter than an internal modem.. and there fore gives me a modem error, when I try to dial.

any clue ?? any one?

hi guys,
I Still think right now Reliance is the best USB internet device to buy, as there is no other company that offers internet on OSX.Also as the new macbook and pros dont have pcmicia slots USB is the only way to go…
I just got the USB reliance one and its pretty good, if your a traveller and got all over the country its perfect, mine worked in MUNNAR also. Its juts amazing that, Though the trafiff deals arent that great, but what the hell as long as you can surf the net and makes loads of more bucks via being n touch with work via reliance….
I have the older Tata Indicom Zte card as i had got it for my compaq, i here there are pcimca slot to USB avaible online, anywhere here in india??? also is anyone interested in buying it off me pls let me know via email…

I called Reliance and they say they have no drivers for the Mac. I called Apples people here RSG (mumbai) and they said Reliance GIVES drivers for the Mac with the USB data connect.

I wrote to Huawei (who makes the card) and they say they dont work on Mac.

YET, I have seen a demo where a Macbook was being used with one.

I called Reliance again and the tech guy proposes to lecture me on how a Macbook is Dual bootable and did I know that the mac can now run “Windows too ?!” UH - HUH !@ Been using macs for 11 years - what a wonderful bit of news , be-still my beating heart !!!
Then Reliance goes one step further - starts asking me if I am running APPLE on an HP laptop and that perhaps then through windows it might work on APPLE running on HP laptop .

H O L Y S M O K E S man; where do they get these guys from !!!!!

Could sure use some help. I’m trying to get my in-laws setup with an iBook and Tata Indicom LG LSP-340E phone.

Have cable, phone, etc., but cannot get the phone recognized by the OS when entering “Network” as suggested above.

Is there anything I need to do to the phone to set it up to act as a modem?

Any suggestions or help greatly appreciated!

I have successfully used Tata Indicom Talky to my Mac Book Pro. I am presently using my Nokia GSM phone to access the internet here using Hutch’s Access scheme. Anyone has any queries about connecting to the internet then you can feel free to visit my blog :D and ask.

@ Tom: You need to create a modem script for the phone, using a Modem Script Generator and adding a command. Don’t remember the exact link or the exact link. Check out tech-tree india forums.

4.6 click on modem tab
4.7 Modem choose ” SUNTAC U-Cable D3(PDC)”

#49 Aditya on 08.09.07 at 9:47 pm

Nirav I did visit that blog. The thing is that it does not focus on Indian needs. It may have some links about an apple reseller here or there, but that hardly counts. Things like internet drivers are indeed a real pain in India and no one discusses things like connecting a phone on the laptop (exceptions ofcourse :) exist)

I do know of some Mac wielding friends who like the idea of a community blog. I am all for it.

Am willing to set up one if you agree. What blogging platform? I would say Blogger simply because of the number of people who use that service even though my personal blog is on wordpress (Though it is a different story how I like wordpress.org much more than wordpress.com,,)

The only concern I have is that people are almost always busy, me included. So it may not have a lot of posts; but they say something is better than nothing and who am I to disagree?

#51 OceanBreeze on 08.15.07 at 10:28 am

Yes Cedric

Just found this site too - came here to post the links but you have done it already. Kudos.

Actually the Mac suppliers in Bombay are demanding Rs 2000 or so to come and “load” drivers that make the Huawei card work and lo and behold I found the site above and it works like a charm.

Now, getting a bit more adventurous I wanted to know if anyone has succesfully had a Tata Indicom OR Reliance Mobile phone from the recent series work with the data cable on a Mac laptop ?

Reason I ask is that if so, then getting the phone and cable for me is better than just the card as I get to use an alternative cel too - not just a data card.

Cheers

I am not sure if my phone is the recent series, it’s LG RD 6230. And I use it with a data cable on Mac all the time. This post was originally written to connect using that phone.

Reliance has launched a lot of lower cost models recently, and I don’t know if they can be used from the Mac. So if someone’s found that, would be great to learn!

Thanks for all the comments everyone! It certainly contributes to a lot of users. This post is one of the most popular on this site :)

I have a macbook pro and a verizon v640 data card already for it (works in the US)

1. Do I need to buy another data card/cable from Reliance when I get to India or can I just hack my verizon CDMA card somehow?

2. Do I need to get the phone or can I just buy the data card?

3. Is this something I should book in the US or just do it when I get to India?

Thanks!!

#76 Nirav on 10.23.07 at 1:18 pm

Ariel:

1. I don’t think your Verizon CDMA card will work here. You would most probably need to get a new one. Unlocking a phone SIM to work in India is possible, but I have seen it only on GSM chips. Not sure about CDMA.

2. I think it may be better if you take a phone plus data cable. Then you can use it for voice and data both.

3. You can do it once you are in India. Or you can ask your relative / host in India to arrange for it before you arrive, so that you can use it quickly. The activation process can take a couple of days once you buy it.

Alternatively, I can just install the solution on my Windows XP side via Parallels. In that case and I am able to connect, can I just move to the Mac side and will it keep the data connection?

i have gone through all the posts at this forum i am a mac book pro user from last one year. Till now I was using internet through Nokia’s N70 using it’s bluetooth facility. Recently I purchased the ZTE MG 880 from reliance and was unable to configure it on my mac but using paralle’s desktop i am able to configure and use this USB modem on my mac book pro. Through which I am getting a very good download speed also. With the netbooster facility provided by reliance I am very happy with the surfing speed. It is very fast compared to all the earlier wireless modems. I have used PCMCI card ZTE on my Sony Vaio for a long period but I was not happy with the speed. But this ZTE MG 880 is giving me fantastic speed. Right now I am trying to create the small private network in win mode of parrallel which will help me to connect net in OS X mode also I will keep you all informed about my progress. Thank you….. Meanwhile if anybody gets the direct drivers for MG 880 please let me know also such that I also can save my procedure to get connected in OS X mode…….

Hi As I have mentioned earlier on this forum with the help of parrellels I have configured my mac book pro to work on Reliance’s USB modem ZTE MG 880. With this I can use internet in both the environments ie in windows XP as well as MAC OS X. I am getting very good speed in both the environments.

Hi Nirav,

Recently I bought Nokia 6275 CDMA.
I am able to use it for internet using the Bluetooth. After reading this article…
This was a little similar to the procedure I used to configure my LG RD6130.

Thanks for putting this on internet.

How to use the “Nokia PC Suit” with help of “Virtual PC 7″ on a Mac?
I tried a lot without any success.

Do you have any idea to share on this?

Warm regards,

Hi Guys

I have a reliance ZTE MG880 CDMA 1x usb data card which works fine on windows. I bought apple macbook pro today and was trying to get it working for this machine. I read the whole stuff here and tried to follow the instructions.

When i insert the card in the usb port and go to apple->system prefernces->network then i do not see any ZTE usb modem detected. Can anyone please help me out with this. Does the au cdma driver which people have talked aboit comes with new apple or i need to download it from somewhere?

I am very much in need to solve this problem, i would be highly thankful to you guys if any one can help me on this ASAP.

Thanks

I bought a HP Laptop and was offered a Reliance Data Card Free Of Charges. A few days later I registered my Laptop with HP and they have issued a number and was asked to contact a number in New Delhi after a few days. After a couple of weeks I called that number and was told to sent a demen draft for Rs.1,000/- being the courier charges to forward my datacard. I have done that also. Now the company where I purchased the laptop says I have made a mistake and should not have sent the draft but would have gone to a Reliance Outlet to collect my datacard after paying some 3500 to 4000 rupees which includes two months subscription.I wrote to their Sales department at Bangalore, Their Office in Cochin and to HP in United States.

Today I received a call from Chennai stating that some documents were missing with my request and to forward the same. Today I have done that also.

Now I want to know if I don’t use Reliance as a internet provider, is there any chance I can use this datacard with tata.or can be used when I am in united states.

Kindly somebody reply to me

Hi,
I recently bought a EC325 Huawei data card from Reliance and have installed the drivers as given above from the Hutch Thailand Site
I have a MAcbook 10.5.1
Initially the drivers got installed properly and i was able to see the huwaei mobile connect in my OS and at that time my connection was not activated
After activating my connection i connected it and tried but i couldnt connect
So i decided to remove the existing one and reinstall the drivers from the beginning but i am facing a problem here
I dont see the Huawei mobile connect configured when i connect my data card after installing the drivers given above successfully
Can you please let me know how to remove the drivers and reinstall them so that i can see the Huawei mobile connect when i reinstall the drivers
Please let me know if i am missing something here
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks and regards,

I got a prepaid netconnect account from Reliance and am really disgusted with it. Throughput if often much less than 1k, which is pitiful, to say the least. Although it seems that Reliance is finally supporting Macs. Anyway, when I went into their place in South Ex, they asked to borrow my modem to see if it would work on someone else’s Mac. Are there any better services out there which work with a Mac? How do companies like this stay in business when they don’t deliver the goods?

#119 Dominic on 04.05.08 at 12:17 pm

This is just the tip of the iceburg.
Once you start recieving the bills and deal with their customer support, you will realize more

I bought a reliance net connect once and my mother lost her sleep for 2 months. Every other day they will call my mother and say ” We will put you son in Jail if you dont pay whatever bill we send.” All their promises before you subscribe are mere cheatings.
They take custome voice form promising to change the plan and forget about it the moment you leave their office.
The executives are trained in how to cheat customers. Their Service Assuarance cell knows only one thing “Escalate Issues”.
They dont care about Common Sense, Laws or any guidelines.
whatever they do, you will have to pay the bills whether write or wrong.
so beware, buy reliance phone only if no other option exist

Thanks for the this blog. But it was not working for me.

But i could do it with some more research. thought of sharing it with you all…!

Mine is Mac - PowerBook G4 - OS X

Download this s/w
http://www.novamedia.de/download/e_demo_l2n_mac.html

install it.

go to network preferences, Network. It will say that it has detected a new huawei modem. Configure this modem.

User name and password are your modem phone number.
The phone number to dial is as usual #777

select modem tab -> NM Universal Modem.
go back to PPP tab -> Dial now

However, I think its slower than in windows. Do any of you guys have any idea to improve speed on Mac???

Thanks..!

Hi,

I bought Reliance data card EC 325 couple of days ago - i have installed and started using it successfully. But yesterday suddenly i got error like “Connection could not be established with your remote server - you need make changes in Network settings…”. I’ve double checked the datacard and it working fine, because i can make calls to mobile. I tried and check my IP address, but there is no ip found in my machine. i’m struggling to resolve this issue.

My TP configuration : Windows XP on IBM T60

your help is highly appreciated.! YOu can reply me at seenivasan_kittu@yahoo.com

Thanks,
Seeni

Another update:

I upgraded to Leopard, and my Netconnect stopped working. Looks like Apple did not include the au CDMA drivers in the latest operating system. That upset my perfectly working setup of LG 6230 Phone, connected via USB cable.

But well, I did some trial and error, and found out that Novatel CDMA driver will work for this setup now.

So anyone who’s setup stops working after upgrading to Leopard (OS X 10.5), please try Novatel.

Hi All,

I have a Reliance USB Data card which was free with my laptop. Can I change the number?

#130 Nirav on 07.01.08 at 6:11 pm

@Ankit: That’s strange. What I can think of is that you may have a proxy for HTTPS websites. And that’s what’s causing the problem. Or may be Reliance had it! Check again and see if these sites work now.

@Ankush: I don’t think you can change the number. But you may check with Reliance customer care.
