Today is a big day for all the Jains in the world. Jainism is a religion based primarily on the value of ahimsa (non injury and non violence). Today is the last day of Paryushan – the eight day annual festival. The day is called Samvatsari.
On this day, Jains perform “samvatsari pratikraman” – an approximately four hour long ritual that acknowledges and sets you free from the sins you have done in the year. The well known aspect about the day is the act of forgiving all the souls who have hurt you, and asking for forgiveness from all the souls you have hurt. The words “Micchami Dukkadam” mean forgive me. I may have hurt you by thoughts, words or physical actions, forgive me of that.
